Ogun State government has shut two fuel stations,Conoil Fuel Station,Ibara and Moore Fuel Station,Asero both in Abeokuta for their failure to provide public conveniences within their premises contrary to the state government Environmental Management,(Miscellaneous Provision Law)2006 as well as the Ogun state Public Health Law 2020.
In ordering their closure after a visit to the stations by the Ogun state Taskforce on Environmental Compliance and Enforcements, Commissioner for Environment,Ola Oresanya said Conoil Fuel Station, Ibara despite its long existence in the area lack public toilets for the use of its customers and the general public while Moore Fuel Station Asero have dilapidated toilets which are contrary to the state government's directive that all the fuel stations, eatries, markets and all other public facilities must provide functioning public conviences within their facilities as part of the state government's effort at eradicating open defecation in the state
Oresanya said Conoil Fuel Station will remain closed until the management of the station provide functioning public toilet within their premises while Moore Fuel Station must refurbish its dilapidated toilet facility and make it functional before the station can also be reopened.
"The two fuel stations will act as a deterrent to others as the Taskforce on Environmental Compliance and Enforcement is going round the state to check on the level of compliance of these public outlets at providing functional conveniences in their premises for public use as anyone of them with dysfunctional facility will be closed down until necessary corrections are effected"
"It is therefore in their best interest to comply and open the conveniences for public use as the state government will not spare any of them found guilty of contravening the directive which is one of the ways at eradicating open defecation in the state"
On the part of the state government at ending open defecation, Oresanya revealed that the state government has provided over eighty ultra-modern biogas energy public toilets in different parts of the state through public private partnership especially on border towns of Isheri,Kara, Wawa,Ibafo,Mowe urging commuters and visitors to the state to visit the public toilets when the need arises to avoid possible sanctions.
He did not forget to remind party organisers in the state to provide moveable toilets at the venues of their events so that they will contribute their quota to the state government's efforts at eradicating open defecation in the state.
