ABEOKUTA– The Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker has appealed to the striking doctors to return to work in the interest of the citizens who needs their services at this critical time.
The commissioner, while fielding questions from newsmen in her office at Oke Mosan, said most of the agitations of the doctors are being looked into at the moment, adding that the lives of the citizens should be paramount at this moment.
In her words, ” the striking doctors had about 5 requests and as government, we have been able to address 3 out of them. The other two requests they are asking for are the minimum wage and the appropriate renumeration”
“As per the minimum wages, the government has agreed with all the work force in the state to a certain minimum wage and as such I believe the doctors too will fall within that group”
“The other part, which is the appropriate renumeration, which means they want their entry point to be moved up. That situation requires a lot of financial burden on the state. We need to carefully assess it, and until we look at our IGR with the cost implication, we cannot make any commitments”
“So, we are appealing to the doctors to atleast be considerate in looking at the entire situation”
“As doctors, it’s actually a vocation and not a job but a calling. So, we are appealing to them as good and compassionate doctors to consider the general population who the impact of their actions will be most felt”
Clearing the air on the replacement of the resident doctors at the isolation center with volunteers, the commissioner said all the doctors at the isolation center are all volunteers, with two withdrawing their services.
“All the health workers at the isolation center, Sagamu are all volunteers, who are being paid some allowance for offering their services and among them are two ARD doctors who has since withdrawn their services”
“However, the vacuum that could have been caused has been closed by their colleagues, their is no gap in our service which means the patient are receiving the excellent care they deserve” she concludes
