Fuel, electricity tariff hike: No going back on strike, protest, NLC, TUC

September 22, 2020
- Beginning from Monday, September 28, Nigerians will witness the mother of all strikes and protests

- This warning came from TUC and the NLC on Tuesday, September 22

- Both unions said that they will embark on the move if the federal government fails to reverse the petrol price and electricity tariff hike.

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Nigeria collaborating with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has resorted to a nation-wide strike and protest as their means of kicking against the petrol price and electricity tariff hike.

The TUC in a statement made available to Legit.ng disclosed that in light of this, it is extending the previous ultimatum to the federal government to Monday, September 28, to allow Nigerians get themselves ready for what is coming.

The statement released by Comrade Quadri Olaleye, the president of TUC and its secretary-general, Musa-Lawal Ozig, partly read: "We want to use this opportunity to call on Nigerians, especially those in the informal sector to bear with us while the industrial action lasts.
"There is no need for the pains we bear. It is a needless one. They ask us to tighten our belts while they loosen theirs. Services are not rendered yet we are compelled to pay estimated bills."
The unions complain that until now, not less than eight states have refused to pay the minimum wage agreed upon by the government.
The TUC and the NLC lamented: "As at today, about eight states are yet to commence the payment of new minimum wage and its consequential adjustment even though the president signed it into law on April 18, 2019.

"We have written letters to the governors and also engaged them in dialogue but all to no avail. Sometimes we wonder if these people have conscience at all."

Earlier, labour unions in the country were planning to go on strike over the recent increase in the price of petrol.

The NLC and the TUC were reportedly consulting civil society allies and relevant organs of labour towards the planned strike.
