Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) has sealed a residential building at the Agba-dam area of the State for not providing toilet facilities for the tenants living in the house which has led them to the practice open defecation.
A statement issued by Adejoke Adekunle, Press Secretary of KWEPA said the General Manager of KWEPA, Alhaji Sa’ad Dan-Musa gave the directive to the concerned department after the landlord failed to adhere to the notices that had been previously issued to him.
The Deputy Director, Environment, Mrs Adedotun Taiwo, who heads the Waste and Sanitation Department, while addressing the tenants, said the action of the landlord contravened the fight against open defecation which is a threat to environmental health.
“The building is inhabitable for you as there are no toilet facilities in place and it is detrimental to the health of every one of you. We are here because it is the duty of the state government to watch out for the health of the citizens and residents of the state.” she said.
She further added that the landlord of the building does not have the interest of the tenants at heart because if he does he would have provided toilet facilities and a good soakaway system in the house.
Adedotun advised the tenants to look out for standard toilet facilities in houses they may want to rent before paying in the nearest future as open defecation is one of the major ways by which diseases are contracted.
