TACKLING PROSTATE CANCER SHOULD BE THE COUNTRY’S FOCUS, Ogun Health Commissioner

The Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker has called on government at all levels to vigorously fight prostate cancer, which has claimed lives of numerous men in the country.

Coker, who stated this when she joined the Ogun State Deputy Governor, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele at the ground-breaking ceremony of Rotary Prostate Cancer Center in Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital ( OOUTH), Sagamu, Ogun State, said approximately one in every 500 men come down with prostate cancer.

She described the disease as a menace which is the most common in Nigerian men, saying late detection and treatment are responsible for the fatalities from the scourge.
The Commissioner commended the initiative of Rotary District 9110 and its investment in the health sector of the State and called on all well meaning individuals as well as organisations to emulate the gesture.

She pointed out that the present administration was determined to improve life expectancy of residents.

"Nigeria as a whole should join forces together to fight the scourge of prostate cancer. This project when completed will be of great help to Ogun State and Nigeria at large.
"The key to cure cancer is early detection and treatment to avoid complications. If all hands are on deck to fight cancer, our nation will be better for it," she said.

Speaking, the District Governor, Bola Oyedele assured that the project would be completed in eight months, soliciting for the support of all and sundry to donate towards equipping the center.
